PRESS TOUR: Party patrol at winter TCA 2017

PASADENA, Calif. -- The 2017 winter TV critics press tour ended Wednesday and that means it's time to rate the parties and networks' assorted press tour performances in hopes of encouraging improvement for the summer 2017 TCA, and to offer a little behind-the-scenes glimpse for folks at home.(Of course, these are just one guy's opinions and agreement will vary wildly depending on the critic.)

While going to parties for work sounds fun, these are working parties where TV critics are often rushing from one celeb to another to get short interviews.

trial and error

PASADENA, Calif. -- NBC’s revival began with its dramas, especially “The Blacklist” and a raft of “Chicago” shows, but after going relatively comedy-less in recent years, the peacock network has started to rebound.

Smart, sophisticated “The Good Place” was a critical hit in the fall. And for midseason NBC has two winning comedies planned.

PASADENA, Calif. -- Jack's back. And Will. And Grace. And Karen.

NBC officialy confirmed what's been rumored: The network will revive "Will & Grace" for a 10-episode limited run in the 2017-18 TV season.

PASADENA, Calif. -- Mary Berry and the gang are back for a new-to-America, fourth edition of "The Great British Baking Show," airing Fridays at 9 p.m. beginning June 16.

Better Call Saul Gus Fring

PASADENA, Calif. -- He's baaaack!

When AMC's "Better Call Saul" returns for its third season at 10 p.m. April 10, "Breaking Bad" character Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) will be re-introduced.

"Saul," a prequel to "Breaking Bad," focuses on Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) when he was known as Jimmy McGill. On "Breaking Bad," Saul introduced Walter White to Gus.

young pope

PASADENA, Calif. -- HBO's "The Young Pope" (9 p.m. Sundays and Mondays for the next five weeks) is a delicious, fascinating series that feels timely but may also outrage and/or depress some viewers with its depiction of a cold, aloof deeply conservative, fictional American Pope formerly known as Lenny Belardo.

"What truly made our church great: fear or tolerance?" Pope Pius XIII asks. Pretty sure his response is "fear."

"From this day forward we need to go back to being prohibited and inaccessible," the Pope bellows.

And then there are the parallels to today's current political climate.

"They chose a Pope they didn't know," Lenny says. "That is their tremendous sin."
