On August 2, Garth Hudson, The Band's organist and master musician, turned 80. He and Robbie Robertson and the sole survivors of the original Band, which began as the Hawks, backing Canadian rockabilly (and Arkansas native) Ronnie Hawkins. Born in Windsor, Ontario in 1937, Eric Garth Hudson, the classically-trained son of musician parents who didn't approve of rock and roll, nonetheless jumped into it in the late 50's when he joind the Canadian band Paul London & The Capers.
