Randy Scruggs, session guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer and four-time Grammy winner, died in Nashville April 17 after a brief illness. His dad was Earl Scruggs, (1926-2012) five-string bluegrass banjo innovator and co-leader of the now-iconic Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys.
Curly Seckler's career in bluegrass lasted well over half a century. His death December 27, two days after his 98th birthday. Severs the last link between the 21st Century and the first generation of bluegrass musicians, contemporaries of the music's creator Bill Monroe. Ironically, Seckler, singer, mandolinist and guitarist, is one of the very few bluegrass pioneers who didn't do an apprenticeship with Monroe's groundbreaking Blue Grass Boys.
