RIP Hugh Masekela: Jazzman/World Music Pioneer

Masekela ap

Trumpeter Hugh Masekela, who died in his native South Africa yesterday at 78 of prostate cancer, was a World Music pioneer long before the term existed. Growing up in the brutally segregated nation, he used his musical talents as a means of escaping, and as his horizons grew after he left, he brought a new voice to jazz and in the 60's, an era when musical influences from other nations were beginning to influence rock music, found a degree of mainstream success few other African performers (aside from longtime friend and collaborator Miriam Makeba) had achieved.    (Photo: Associated Press)

Three interesting songs in last night's "Mad Men," and one bonus of interest.
