In an era when the legacy of Fred Rogers has been celebrated, discussed and analyzed, it's worth noting today is the birthday of one of its pillars from the start in 1968 until the end in 2000, when final tapings ended: Joe Negri, who turns 92 today.
Here he is on an early episode of the Neighborhood. And for guitar nuts, yes, you're seeing Joe and his 1942 D'Angelico archtop guitar (hand-built by New York luthier John D'Angelico) that he played from his days in Pittsburgh, to his time with the Shep Fields Orchestra (1943-44) until the early 1970's when he sold it. At that time, along with his work on the Neighborhood, Joe was still WTAE's fulltime Music Director.
2017: "Body and Soul," a jazz standard, in a video produced by his granddaughter Nina.
Happy birthday, Joe!
