joethornton_trade1Xtreme Machine acquires Joe Thornton:
For the second straight year, I make a deal for the first overall pick of the 1997 NHL draft, Joe Thornton.  The all-star playmaking center has seen his numbers steadily decline over the past few seasons, however a strong February shows he's on pace for an improvement in points from a year ago.  Ironically enough, last season I traded Ilya Kovalchuk, currently the top forward on my team this year, for Thornton.

jonashiller_trade1Mr Magoo on Ice acquires Jonas Hiller:
After getting off to a VERY rocky start in the first three months of the season, Hiller is red hot and so are the Ducks.  Hiller posted a 7-2 record with a 1.55 GAA in January an 8-4 record with a 2.15 GAA in February.  Despite currently being 7 points out of the last playoff spot, the Ducks look like a good bet to make the playoffs with Hiller between the pipes.

Trade Review:

It was Mr Magoo on Ice that began the trade talks earlier in the week as he had offered Loui Eriksson in exchange for Jonas Hiller.  While Eriksson is a good player and about the same in terms of fantasy value to Thornton right now, I trust Thornton a little more and countered with this offer.

Mr Magoo on Ice acquires a red hot goalie and along with Mike Smith as probably two of the hottest goalies in the league right now.  He's not going to find anything on waivers this good and he has pretty good depth offensively to negate the impact of losing Thornton.

For me and the Xtreme Machine, it was a no brainer.  My first two picks were Tim Thomas and Roberto Luongo.  Plus, I had Martin Brodeur jumping in and out in my lineup, so Hiller was expendable.  My defense is rock solid, so forward is the only place I can really improve.  I traded for Joe Thornton last year and it worked out pretty well, as the Sharks are a good second half team, and his recent hot streak gives me confidence that he'll be a solid contributor in my quest for a second straight FF hockey league title.

I don't know if there's really a winner of this trade here.  Both teams traded expendable parts to get what they needed and in terms of fantasy value, both players are about the same.
