DeCourcy: Pitt 'could make a run'

Is there a team in the NCAA field creating less buzz than Pitt? There’s barely a mention of Pitt, even in the West Region stories. But Mike DeCourcy thinks the Panthers might be a surprise. He picks them as his ‘darkhorse team,’ one `that could make a run toward April.’

The toughest decisions the NCAA Tournament selection committee might have faced essentially were made for them as Selection Sunday approached.

 

Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee all excused themselves from the conversation. Ole Miss won its way into an automatic bid. So it became less of a challenge to build an attractive bracket, and the committee members seem to have done an admirable job.

 

They valued dominance as they should have, placing Middle Tennessee State (28-5) into the field, granting a No. 6 seed to 30-win Memphis and presenting the West No. 1 to Gonzaga despite its membership in the decidedly mid-major West Coast Conference.
