Fox debuts thriller 'The Passage'

Author Justin Cronin’s best-selling trilogy certainly has a lot of fans, but, wow it turns out to be a difficult story to translate to television. This week’s Fox pilot for “The Passage” (9 p.m. Monday, WPGH) is the network’s second attempt at a first episode and it’s not that great, leaving one to wonder how different (better? worse?) the discarded first iteration of the thriller must have been.

When a global pandemic that essentially turns people into vampires threatens, U.S. health authorities decide to kidnap a 10-year-old girl with no paper trail – her mother overdosed; they grab her before she gets into the system -- and plan to enlist her in clinical trials for a potential antidote.

Federal agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar, “Saved by the Bell”) is tasked with picking up Annie ( Saniyya Sidney, “Fences”) to take her to the researchers at Project Noah. But Brad – who has a dead daughter and ex-wife in his background – bonds with Annie and by the end of the pilot they’re on the run from the feds.
