"Shadowhunters" is another serialized drama with supernatural elements that ABC Family Freeform is calling the network's first "saga series," but it's the second prime time saga series in two weeks after MTV's "The Shannara Chronicles" last week.
Of the two, "Shadowhunters" seems like the most comfortable in its own skin. It feels like an ABC Family Freeform show from the jump as it introduces Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara, above at left), a young woman who turns 18 and learns she's a "shadowhunter," a human-angel hybrid who's charged with hunting down demons. Her mother gets kidnapped, her best friend who's crushing on her can't see the other shadowhunters she talks to and there's the hint of a romance to come with a shadowhunter named Jace (Dominic Sherwood, above at right).
It's soapy and action-packed while still paying attention to developing its characters, the typical ABC Family Freeform mix of elements that's proved successful with its audience so far.
