On Tuesday, the first day of E3, Fortnite brought pros, celebrities, media, fans and curious spectators to the Banc of California Stadium just south of downtown LA. What was once reserved for LA’s Major League Soccer team was temporarily transformed into one of the most grand esports arenas in the country.
The title “Fortnite” occupied the entire upper deck overlooking the field. A stage to house the participants was constructed that spanned the entire width of the field where a goal used to be. Fans packed seats and bleachers on the field level as they looked forward to seeing the top pros, streamers and celebrities on the stage.
Just off of the field in the player lounge, children of VIPs took pictures with their favorite players. An open bar had game-themed drinks like Slurp Juice. Celebrities bantered back and forth with friendly trash talk about the impending competition. The stars of the show, Ninja and Marshmallow milled around while getting ready for the competition. The winning team gets $3 million donated to a charity of their choice.
“Fortnite” is more than just a game now. It’s its own culture that transcends its industry. To hype up the crowd, the event host had people recreating the popular game’s dance moves. Costumed characters wandered around interacting with fans.
At the time of writing this post, there were more than 610,000 viewers on Twitch. That’s before the competition even began. Nobody would’ve thought “Fortnite” could reach these heights. Nobody thought any game could reach these heights. But here it is. These are the sights from the Fortnite Pro-Am at E3 2018.
