Key Super Smash Bros. Info from Nintendo Direct (UPDATE)

Super Smash Bros. U - new charactersIn case you missed all the excitement from today’s Nintendo Direct regarding “Super Smash Bros.,” here’s all the key information in easy-to-handle bullet points.

 

  • Release Window - The 3DS and Wii U versions have different release windows. The 3DS version will come out first this summer, while the Wii U version will be released in the winter.

  • Frames per second - Characters in the 3DS version will flow at 60 frames per second, but stages can drop to 30.

  • Announced Stages (Wii U) - Mario Galaxy, Pyrosphere (Metroid), Town and City (Animal Crossing), Boxing Ring (Punch-Out), Pilot Wings, Skyloft, (Zelda), Windy Hill (Sonic), Garden of Hope (Pikmin), Wii Fit Studio, Palunea’s Temple (Kid Icarus), and Halberd (Kirby’s Dream Land).

  • Announced Stages (3DS) - Reset Bomb Forest (Kid Icarus), Mario 3D Land, Spirit Train (Zelda), Gerudo Valley (Zelda), Arena Ferox (Fire Emblem), Tortimer Island (Animal Crossing), Prism Tower (Pokemon), Rainbow Road (Mario Kart), Find Mii, and Balloon Fight.

  • All stages will have their own Final Destination versions. This means Final Destination won't always have the same background.

  • The 3DS and Wii U versions will have the same characters, but different stages

  • Boss fights will be present. Up to 4 players can take on a boss. Different stages will feature different bosses. A boss called the Yellow Devil was shown on Mega Man’s Dr. Wiley’s stage.

  • New Characters announced - Charizard, Greninja, and Tiki of Fire Emblem were announced. UPDATE: Tiki of Fire emblem was not announced. It was just featured in one of Nintendo Direct's trophy quizes.

  • Characters shown during Nintendo Direct: Link, Mari, Donkey Kong, Samus, Kirby, Yoshi, Fox, Pikachu, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Zelda, Sheik, Marth, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, Pikmin & Olimar, Diddy Kong, Dedede, Lucario, Toon Link, Sonic, Villager, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainers, Rosalina & Luma, Little Mac, Charizard, Greninja, and Tiki.

  • Characters will no longer change form mid-match. For instance Zelda will stay as Zelda and Sheik will stay as Sheik.

  • Items announced - Beam sword, bumper, motion sensor bomb, beetle, back shield, bombchu, fairy bottle, fire wall, ore club, POW blockt belt, steel driver.

  • Online play is coming to both the 3DS and Wii U versions. Online battles can be played with friends or strangers. Nintendo suggests using a USB LAN adapter for the Wii U for stability. There will be two modes: For Fun and For Glory. For Fun mode will feature random stages and items, and will keep track of only wins. For Glory mode will have no items and will only be played on Final Destination stage. Players' wins and losses will be saved in the For Glory mode.

  • Online ranking system announced - The score is called Global Smash Power. The Global Smash Power score will be granted based on performance in offline modes. There will be no score given in online matches. Matchmaking will still be based on the Global Smash Power score.

  • Assist Trophies announced - Andross, Devil, Knuckle Joe, Saki Amamiya, Lyn, Nintendog, Waluigi, Dr. Wright, Skull Kid, Mother Brain, Midna, Ashley, Dark Samus, Chain Chomp, Isabelle, Elec Man, Color TV- Game 15

  • Pokemon announced - Meowth, Eevee, Staryu, Metagross, Fennekin, Meloetta, Gogoat, Entei, Deoxys, Palkia, Kyurem, Victini, Keldeo, Xerneas

  • Pit no longer has a glide ability

  • Little Mac has a power meter that charges by landing hits and being hit. When the meter is full, he as able to land an auto-KO punch.

  • Custom Move Sets - Players can set custom move sets. Nintendo didn’t say too much about what this meant, but it looks like players will be able to customize characters abilities. These custom sets will be playable online, but only when facing friends.

  • Smash Run mode announced - Smash Run is an adventure mode similar to All-Star mode in Melee that is playable with up to four players. Players will journey through a stage, facing enemies and collecting items. Players will then meet at the end of the stage and battle with the items collected in the stage.

UPDATE 4/9/14 10:13 a.m. : The announced character bullet has been updated. Tiki from Fire Eblem was not announced. She was briefly feaured as a trophy.
