Peter Griffin: 'Family Guy's' Country Music Critic

If there's one problem with some current writing about country music, and it's been true since the Garth Brooks era, it's that quite a few wouldbe country critics and journalists have little real knowledge of the music. They see it solely in the moment, not as part of a century-plus continuum even the most superficial Nashville hypemasters still claim it to be.  Some don't think that knowing the territory matters. I think it does.

That said, every once in a while, someone without much knowledge manages to knock it out of the park.   That's what happened on Sunday night's Family Guy, when animated characters Peter, Quagmire, Joe and Cleveland (back on vacation) decide they need to find God.  One of their first stops: Nashville and Carrie Underwood, with a detour past Taylor Swift.

Taylor, despite the "Not too swift" character, comes off unscathed.

But Carrie?  "She's smart," Peter declares.  "She won her job in a contest."

And despite the occasional genuine talent unearthed by junk reality shows like American Idol and The Voice, I think Peter (via Seth McFarlane) got it exactly right. Even if it was meant in fun, rest assured a few in Nashville are no doubt seething over this barbed shout-out.  That's how the place has always been. Folks there are still PO'ed at me over critical record reviews I did 15-20 years ago.  That's how it is.

So to Peter (and Seth), as they once shouted on Hee-Haw:  "SAAAAAA---LUTE!!!"
