Musgraves, who released three albums over the past 11 years (yep, the first when she was 14!) on her own, had a Top Twenty single last fall with "Merry Go Round." She placed in seventh place in the thankfully extinct musical reality show Nashville Star back in 2007, but we won't hold that against her. I'll have more to say about the album closer to release time.
She also co-wrote "Undermine" with Trent Dabbs, heard in the second episode of ABC's Nashville. This is Musgraves singing it with Dabbs.
Her style owes a bit to Dolly Parton, and to her credit, she's experienced enough to go her own way, no attempts to follow, say, Taylor Swift. I was disappointed to see another young back-to-basics singer, the edgier Ashton Shepherd, part ways with Mercury. Musgraves has a clear potential if the sell her as herself and avoid the usual die-stamping Music Row is known for. Keep your fingers crossed.
