The Band in The Burgh: November 1, 1970

Well, I'll be damned.

Researching videos for yesterday's Levon Helm video entry,  I come upon a clip of the original Band (Levon singing "The Weight") onstage at the Syria Mosque November 1, 1970, before either the Pittsbugh Press or PG covered rock music to any extent.  At the time, Stage Fright was the current album of the moment.  Obviously, this has been around a while and noted elsewhere, but I never caught it and I suspect a lot of you may not have been aware of it either.

Given the era, the video quality (film) is good as is the audio.  It's just four songs, but all of them are Band standards (including Dylan's "This Wheel's On Fire" from Music From Big Pink).  The songs are "Time to Kill" (from Stage Fright), "The Weight," "Wheel's On Fire" and "Up On Cripple Creek."  A full 18+ minutes!

For the many out there who remember the Mosque and how good the sound could be, let it serve as a reminder.  I wasn't at this show, but I caught the Allman Brothers--with Duane and Dicky--and a thoroughly crazed Little Richard there soon afterward. That was one hell of a night, just as this clip is one remarkable document.

Enjoy.
